Degree of Melting

The ability of ultrasound to penetrate a polymer depends largely on the melting state of the latter. Thus the amplitude of an ultrasonic signal having gone through the polymer can be used to monitor the polymer melting state.

Implementation of ultrasonic sensors on an internal mixer and the echo signals reflected from the tips of a mixing blade were monitored.    
An LDPE melting process in an internal mixer was monitored through torque and temperature measurement.
The same process was also monitored simultaneously with ultrasound. The ultrasonic signal strength indicates clearly the start and completion of the melting.
