Real-Time Material Properties Monitoring Powered By RheoSonic TM Technology

While discontinuity or defect detection using ultrasound is our specialty, we constantly look for new applications where we can apply our extensive knowledge and experience with ultrasound.

If you are processing polymers, extruding metals or doing die-casting, our patented technology can be used to monitor material properties in-line and in real time during the production process.

After 20 years of research & development and 3 years of testing, Real-Time Material Properties Monitoring Systems are now commercially available for the first time ever.

The systems use Dynamic Process Monitor (DPM) instrumentation which is compact, portable, non-destructive and non-intrusive.

Benefits for Polymer Extrusion, Compounding and Injection Moulding

  n-line Quality Control
  Reduce waste and reject rate
Maximize the throughput and increase production yield
Monitor the entire process from hopper to die exit
Avoid unnecessary shutdown for screw and barrel checkup
  Reduce cycle time

  Melt Quality Index
  Viscosity (Molecular Weight)
  Polymer Degradation
  Reactive Extrusion
  Foam Extrusion
  Barrel Wear and Screw Status
  Residence Time Distribution
  Polymer Blends
  Filler Concentration
  Filler Dispersion
  Degree of Melting and Mixing
  Filling Completion
  Mould and Part Temperature

Benefits of Real-Time Monitoring:

  In-line Quality Control
  Reduce waste and reject rate
  Increase production yield
  Reduce cycle time

Why Ultrasound?

See through the barrel, the mould or the die
Sensitivity to both material properties and processing conditions
Non-destructive (no alteration of the materials)
Non-invasive (no interference with the process)
  Real-time monitoring
Robust (no complex or moving parts)
  Easy operation and maintenance
  Cost effective
Capable of monitoring from feed hopper to exit

How does it work?

Pulses of low power ultrasound (less than 0.1 Watt = non-destructive) can be propagated through the polymer melt
Sound velocity, attenuation, reflection coefficient and scattered signals are measured in real time and dependent on molecular, chemical and physical properties of the material
Any change in the material properties and process parameters may be linked with the variations of the ultrasonic properties
Молекулярная масса или вязкость расплава обычно проверяется в автономном режиме
